A site between Winthrop Street and Central Street became home to Hallowell Granite Works. The complex included a business office, two stone-cutting sheds, a modeling and sculpture studio, carpenter's shop, blacksmith's shop, stable, wagon house, storehouse, boiler-house with stack and a rail siding. Workers produced building stones, paving stones and statuary and monuments.

The paving stones, 6x8 inches, sold for 20 cents apiece and were shipped out in 50-60 ton quantities. The overhead walk at the top of the photo connected the office to the sheds.
