Ice storm' Hallowell House, Hallowell, 1998
Hubbard Free Library
During the Ice Storm of 1998, Hallowell city officials had their hands full. Public Works was spreading sand and salt, clearing trees, and doing whatever they could to make the area safer. City Office workers were communicating with Central Maine Power and the food bank to get power to the area and get food to the elderly and needy. Police officers were dealing with downed power lines, blocking them off and removing them if they were deemed unsafe.
The police were also warning people about the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and house fires with the use of candles, propane, and kerosene heaters. Hallowell city officials did a great job handling one of the worst natural disasters Maine has ever seen. Without them, the situation could have been a lot worse.
