HURRICANE CAROL AND EDNA STRIKE MAINE!!!!!!
There were two hurricanes. One was Hurricane Carol, which was before Hurricane Edna. There was not as much damage as hurricane Carol. Hurricane Edna was a smaller hurricane. In this work it is going to tell you about both of them.
From September 2nd through September 15th a category 3 hurricane called Hurricane Carol tore through New England covering all of Connecticut, Rhode island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, part of Vermont and all of Maine. With the hurricane it brought winds that at its peak was 121 MPH. The hurricane caused $15 million dollars in damage and 8 deaths. It had a minimum central pressure of 940 Mb (millibar). Also Brunswick got 8.5 inches of rain. Hurricane Carol came just 1 day before Hurricane Edna. Hurricane Edna was not nearly as bad as Carol.
There were winds of hurricane strength over eighty five miles an hour at 4:15 p.m. The damage to farms homes and public buildings was extreme. Hundreds of trees were knocked down. Also, boats and the Kennebec Yacht Club were endangered. The public utilities were destroyed and repair crews worked throughout the night restoring services. Tuesday’s wind storm was the worst since September 1938, A similar hurricane burst into Maine in the early evening hours. A family of seven lost there home when a large tree flattened their modest home on Academy Street.
News Paper Report
At 2:00 PM yesterday morning Hurricane Edna hit Maine. It brought over 6 inches of rain and winds up to 85 MPH. It came just 1 day after Hurricane Carol. Many homes were damaged by flying debris. There were 29 people that were killed. Eight of which were in Maine.
Some have said this has been one of Maine’s worst hurricanes since it has caused $40.5 million in damages. Even though Maine is not in a normal hurricane path we are still not immune to the destruction of a hurricane. We were able to interview Sam Webber who said that he only had about an hour of warning before the hurricane hit. He also said that he was afraid to go near the windows in his house because of fear that tree limbs were going to crash through the windows. He also had two boats that were destroyed.
Also a family of 10 was trapped on top of their car by the flood waters. A human chain of rescuers were able to save 9 of them but an 8 year old girl was swept away. The winds at their peak were 120mph and stayed at that speed for more than 2 days. The first time it hit land was on Long Island, and New York. It hit Long Island directly as a category 2 hurricane. The hurricane lasted a total of 13 days.
